Toshiba Satellite A205 Review

The A205 laptop appears to be primarily targeted to students and home users, rather than business users. While it does have some security features business users have enjoyed like fingerprint readers coupled with security login software, the flashy looks of this laptop might drive them away. Students on the other might enjoy the gloss finish, bright blue indicator LEDs, and flashy “Toshiba” print across the back of the display.

Toshiba's new line of mainstream laptops manages to add just enough sizzle to keep things interesting, despite being released just weeks before Intel's Santa Rosa platform (and its new CPUs and chipsets) debut. The most interesting feature here is the laptop's built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi antenna. The tipping point may be fast approaching when it will be time to trade in that old 54g router for an 802.11n model. The $1,349 Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617, one of several preconfigured A205 models, also includes Harman Kardon speakers and a Labelflash DVD burner that can burn text and images onto your optical media. These high-end perks help the system stand out from the mainstream crowd and make it worth a look if you're specifically interested in any of them.

Windows Vista was released with a myriad of editions. The most common of these is the Home Premium edition. Toshiba pulls off a surprise with the Satellite A205-S4629 by including the Ultimate Edition of the new operating system. This gives the system complete access to all the multimedia, business, networking and backup features. It is a surprise as this version is typically only found on top of the line notebook PCs.
