  With digital cameras becoming more affordable every day, the days of mechanical models and ‘wet’ printing seem numbered. Shooting still and moving pictures digitally, offers another edge that many ‘shooters’ will find attractive: the ability to display one’s picture on a large, bright screen to a room full of admires.

  To make this happen, the industry has come up with a canny new gadget: The Digital Photo Frame- and VU Technologies, a US-based sister company of desi PC maker, Zenith Computers has just brought the first models to India.

 The VU Digital Photo Frame is a liquid crystal screen, 10.4 inches in diagonal, styled to look one of those ornate family heirloom frames. You can load hundreds of photos and even create a slide show complete with commentary or background music- the frame comes with integral speakers. A photo sensitive feature, adjust the intensity of the room, and if required the frame can be connected to a TV or a DVD player, to double as a movie screen. It accepts all currently popular, music, movie and video formats. Rated at just 16 watts, it is fairly frugal power-wise – and at Rs.12, 500($260) it doesn’t cost much more than a normal LCD computer display of comparable size. But  armed with this new-era Photo Frame, you can give that wedding photo album, whole digital lease of life now.

  They were all talking about the slingbox, a palm-sized gadget which, attached to your TV grabs the content flowing from the cable, digitizes it and sends it through the internet to anywhere in the world for you to catch it- with a laptop or PC.

          Even as the US media raved about it, the latest avatar if the Slingbox was on display at the annual developer conference of Texas Instruments(TI), which ended here on Friday.

             Its ticking heart is a special digital signal processing chip from TI. The Slingbox was designed and developed just one km away from the conference venue by a small team of Indian engineers.

             The newest model costing $110(Rs.4000), worked with all popular smart phone operating systems- which means you can catch a Bollywood movie or cricket coverage from your home TV, virtually anywhere in the world, even on a mobile phone or pocket PC.

             “Clip and Sling”- the ability to record and share portions of the content, with friends, using a few clicks

 “Slingcatcher”- the ability to download content directly from the Internet without having to use a PC.

When psychologist exhorted people to “harness the power within you,” they never meant it quite so literally.

            The latest edition of the U.S journal Science carries a paper by researshers at canada’s Simon Fraser University, which moots a knee-mounted system that can generate electric power from the natural motion of walking.

 Like a knee brace

            Called the biochemical Energy Harvester, the device looks like an orthopaedic knee brace. It ‘harvest’ energy as the walker’s muscles work to slow the movement of the leg forward.

             Developed at the Locomotion Lab of Simon Fraser University by a team led by Max Donelan, the ‘bionic battery’ device, if worn on both legs, is said to be able to generate 5 watts of energy quite easily & 13 watts if wearer jogs.

 A minute counts

            A minute’s waking can generate enough energy to run a mobile phone for 30 minutes, say the researchers. Professor Donelan says the device would be useful to anyone who runs out of power for the multiple devices one carries these days.

           The team hopes to have working prototypes made within 18 months by spin-off  company they have started called Bionic Power Inc.

 The principle is similar to the dynamo sets that used to be popular with cyclist where a small wheel was set spinning by the moving cycle rim to generate enough power to light the head light 

Cooking recipes for making PIZZA

Description

Ingredients

1 cup lukewarm water (110 degrees) 2 packages yeast 3 1/2 cups unbleached flour 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup olive oil 2 cups fresh basil leaves2 cloves garlic, chopped 3 tablespoons pine nuts 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 sweet red pepper, seeded and sliced into strips 1 green peppers, seeded and sliced into strips 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon water 1/2 pound garlic and fennel sausage or sweet Italian sausage 3 ounces goat cheese 10 ounces Mozzarella cheese, coarsely grated 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons cornmeal

Preparation

Dissolve yeast in water and set aside. Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl. Make a "well" in the center, pour in yeast solution and olive oil. Blend in the flour using a fork, working towards the outside of the well. As dough becomes stiff, incorporate remaining flour by hand. Gather into a ball and knead eight to ten minutes on a floured board. Place in an oil-coated bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, approximately two hours.  Prepare pesto sauce using a blender or food processor. Combine all ingredients except cheese. Process but do not create a puree. Stir in cheese. Set side. Sauté onions and peppers in one tablespoon olive oil and water in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir frequently until peppers are soft. Drain and set aside. Brown sausage, breaking into pieces as it cooks. Drain off excess fat. Chop coarsely and set aside. Preheat over to 400 degrees. Spread remaining olive oil evenly over a 12--inch pizza pan. Sprinkle with cornmeal. Punch down pizza dough, flatten lightly with a rolling pin, turn and flatten with fingers. Place dough in pan and spread to edges with fingertips. Bake five minutes. Spread pesto sauce over dough. Crumble goat cheese evenly over pesto. Add onions and peppers, sausage, and cheeses. Bake 10 minutes or until crust is slightly brown and cheese is bubbly

Splinter Cell : Pandora Tomorrow

Game review:

Sam Fisher is back, and this time, he's brought some friends. Well, that's not exactly true--Fisher, an ultrasecret agent in league with the US government, always works alone. But the point is, the sequel to Ubisoft's blockbuster hit, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, not only offers more of the same spectacular single-player stealth action, starring Sam, that was featured in the original game, but also boasts a genuinely innovative, new multiplayer mode for up to four players, in which small groups of spies must match wits with heavily armed mercenaries. The multiplayer mode ties in with the single-player storyline, though the two portions of the game are completely self-contained. In fact, both the single-player and multiplayer portions of Pandora Tomorrow are highly impressive in their own right and add up to an experience that will surely appeal to fans of the first Splinter Cell, let alone anyone remotely interested in a game about high-tech stealth, subterfuge, and sabotage.

Pandora Tomorrow features more of the same cinematic stealth action as its predecessor, plus a genuinely innovative, new multiplayer mode.

The title of Pandora Tomorrow refers to a code phrase used by the presumed villain of the game, a guerrilla leader threatening the free world with a biological contagion. In the single-player portion of the game, you'll reprise the role of Sam Fisher and track this culprit around the globe, in locations ranging from a speeding passenger train hurtling across Paris, to a military camp in Indonesia. The first Splinter Cell game took place predominantly in building interiors, which were richly detailed but naturally mundane. One of Pandora Tomorrow's obvious improvements on its predecessor is in how it takes place in more-exotic locales. In Indonesia, you'll creep through the heavy brush, perhaps using the dense foliage to hide the bodies of your victims out of sight. On the passenger train, you'll shimmy along the outside to avoid detection and will come dangerously close to being flung to your death from the fast-moving car. This train level comes pretty early on in the campaign and is the shortest and probably the most impressive of the game's missions. There are only eight in total, but most of them are quite long, so veteran Splinter Cell players should expect a good 10 hours' worth of action.

The core gameplay is basically the same, which, for the most part, is a very good thing. You'll sneak your way through the game's linear scenarios, avoiding or incapacitating any unsuspecting guards (or, sometimes, civilians) who might otherwise threaten your mission of secrecy. It's not difficult to alert passersby to your presence, either by moving too quickly (or otherwise making too much noise) or by blundering into a well-lit area. There are other nasty surprises in store for you. Hidden antipersonnel mines (visible only when you toggle your thermal vision), infrared trip wires (likewise), booby traps, motion detectors, security cameras, and other such devices make the going quite difficult.

You've got plenty of tricks up your sleeve, too. Fisher is typically armed with a silenced pistol as well as his trusty SC20K multipurpose experimental assault rifle, which he can use for some silent sniping when lethal force is permitted or which he can use to fire off a variety of different gadgets. Those who played Splinter Cell will recognize all of these, which range from diversionary cameras to smoke grenades to electrifying (but nonlethal) rounds. Fisher's other gadgets include lock picks, an optical fiber wire used for seeing what's on the other side of a closed door, and his combined night vision/thermal vision goggles. He's fully decked out to get the job done by any means necessary.

The multiplayer portion is like a completely separate game, though it ties in with the single-player storyline of Pandora Tomorrow.

Pandora Tomorrow's storyline is somewhat more cohesive than that of its predecessor, and some of the gameplay elements are thankfully a bit more transparent this time around. For example, the game inherits a somewhat contrived element from its predecessor: In Splinter Cell you needed to hide the bodies of your victims out of sight to avoid setting off an alarm, which would possibly result in the failure of your mission. You needed to hide all bodies even when there was no one left conscious to pay them much heed. Pandora Tomorrow at least makes it clear that this is always necessary, and a helpful blip on your stealth meter (which indicates how camouflaged you are in the darkness) lets you know where it's safe to dump a body so no one will notice. Also, in most missions, you don't automatically fail if an alarm is sounded; you'll be afforded up to three such mistakes, though at scripted points in each mission, the alarm stage will reset back to zero, and you'll be able to proceed somewhat less anxiously.
