The JAQ3 is a Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition device running AKU 3.2. It's got a quad band GSM world phone inside that will work anywhere GSM service is available and it has EDGE (but no 3G) for data. US carriers don't offer i-mate branded products, rather they're sold unlocked for use with any GSM carrier via importers and online specialty retailers. The JAQ3 was just released so online pricing is a bit variable but we expect it to average $550 to $599 in the US after initial demand decreases.
Let's talk specs, though you may want to get your sleeping cap on. The JAQ3 is almost the same in terms of hardware as the original JAQ ,but adds WiFi, a 2.0mp camera, a smaller screen, and a lower capacity battery. There is no doubt that i-mate has created the JAQ line to be business devices - they are no frills, messaging devices. The JAQ3 is running Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC phone edition with AKU 3.2, features a 200MHz TI IMAP processor, 2.4" landscape QVGA touchscreen, 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, WiFi b & g, Quad band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth 1.2, a 1200mAh battery (with 4 hours talk/120 hours standby), external MicroSD slot, and a full QWERTY keyboard.
What you will first notice is the enormous size of the JAQ3. On its front side it has relatively large 2.55 display and full-sized QWERTY hardware keyboard. Such display is nothing extraordinary for a PPC, except that it is in landscape orientation (built-in software allows you to use it in Portrait view).
It's easy to use the keyboard although the small size of the keys they are raised and the separated ones can be easily felt and it rarely happens to press two keys at the same time. Pressing a key gives very good tactile feedback, but is not very easy.
The I-mate Jaq3 sports a sleeker design and adds a 2-megapixel camera and integrated Wi-Fi. The Windows Mobile 5 smart phone also has integrated Bluetooth, push e-mail capabilities, and the I-mate Suite, which provides extra productivity and security utilities to the business user.
