Unless you put them side by side, you'd be hard-pressed to spot the physical differences between the two new Centrino laptops from Lenovo, the ThinkPad T61 and the ThinkPad R61. Both 14-inch models include all the important parts of Intel's revamped Centrino platform, including new Core 2 Duo CPUs, extra onboard Turbo Memory (for boosting access times), and 802.11n Wi-Fi. While the slightly bulkier Centrino Duo R61 aims for the sweet spot in the price/performance matrix, the more expensive Centrino Pro T61 is a little thinner, a little lighter, and adds Intel's Active Management Technology, allowing the IT department to manage the system from afar, even when it's in sleep mode or powered down.
The ThinkPad T61 is a premium product with a durable build, it is geared towards business users or simply those willing to pay a bit more to get something that won't fall apart after 1-year of use. For somebody that travels a lot or relies on their notebook to earn a livelihood, the build and reliability factor is probably more important than having the latest and greatest components inside.
An Intel chipset launch is never complete without Lenovo offering a new ThinkPad to take advantage of it. The ThinkPad T61 Widescreen ($2,510 direct) is the latest in Lenovo's ThinkPad T-series of world-class laptops that have stood the test of time among corporate professionals. With the T61 Widescreen, you get the absolute best from Intel's newest Centrino Duo platform. The system is loaded with Intel's fastest Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, and discrete graphics from the available nVidia Quadro NVS 140M. When you factor in all the other intangibles (comfortable keyboard, lightweight chassis, and more), it's obvious why the Editors' Choice for business laptops couldn't go to anyone else.
